On the advancement trail, a Cub Scout progresses towards a badge of rank based on their grade. They need not have earned the previous rank in order to earn the next.  To earn each badge of rank a Cub Scout earns the six required Adventures and at least two elective Adventures.  Required Adventures are based on the aims and areas of importance in Scouting. Each badge of rank is age-appropriate, so earning a rank below a Cub Scout’s current grade is not permitted.

Lions Scouts

Kindergarden age

Lion is a family-oriented program. A youth and their parent or caring adult partner join Scouting together. A group of six to eight youths and their adult partners meet together in a group called a den.  They have fun participating in den meetings and outings while making memories together.

The Lion program forms a strong foundation for a lifetime of fun and meaningful family adventures. There are  adventures in the Lion program. Six adventures are required for the Lion to earn the Lion badge. The required adventures help youth explore important Scouting ideas. The remaining twelve adventures are known as elective adventures and two are required to earn the Lion badge. Each adventure is designed to help your child have fun and learn useful things.

Tiger Scouts

1st grade age

The Tiger rank is for youths who are in first grade or are age 7. To earn the Tiger badge, a cub must complete six required adventures with their den or family and two elective adventures of their den or family’s choosing. As the cub completes each adventure, they will receive the adventure loop for that adventure, which they can wear on their belt. When the cub has completed the eight required adventures, they can receive the Tiger badge. The Tiger badge is given to the adult partner at a pack meeting. Then, during a grand ceremony, the adult gives the badge to the cub.

After they have earned the Tiger badge, a Tiger Scout can work on the remaining Tiger electives until they finish first grade (or turn 8 years old). They can choose elective adventures that may show them new hobbies and teach them skills that will be useful during their Scouting years. When they complete an elective adventure, they receives an additional adventure loop to wear on their belt.

Wolf Scouts

2nd grade age

The Wolf rank is for cubs who have finished first grade (or who are 8 years old). To earn the Wolf badge, the cub must complete six required adventures and two elective adventures. Their parent or guardian and den leader approves each requirement by signing off on the completion and the cub receives an adventure loop for each adventure. When the cub has met all requirements, the Wolf badge is presented to the parent or guardian at the next pack meeting. During an impressive ceremony, the parent or guardian then presents the badge to the cub.

After they have earned the Wolf badge, a Wolf Scout can work on the remaining Wolf electives until they finish second grade (or turns 9 years old). They can choose elective adventures that may show new hobbies and teach skills that will be useful during their Scouting years. When they complete an elective adventure, they receive an additional adventure loop to wear on their belt.

Bear  Scouts

3rd grade age

The Bear rank is for cubs who have finished second grade (or who are 9 years old). To earn the Bear badge, a cub must complete six required adventures and two elective adventures. Their parent or guardian and den leader approves each requirement by signing off on the completion, and the cub receives an adventure loop for each adventure. When the cub has met all requirements, the Bear badge is presented to their parent or guardian at the next pack meeting. During an impressive ceremony, the parent or guardian then presents the badge to the cub.

After they have earned the Bear badge, a Bear Scout can work on the remaining Bear electives until they finish third grade (or turn 10 years old). They can choose elective adventures that may show new hobbies and teach skills that will be useful during their Scouting years. When they complete an elective adventure, they receive an additional adventure loop to wear on their belt.

Webelos Scouts

4th grade age

Webelos dens are for Cubs who have completed third grade (or reached age 10). Webelos Scouts get to work on the six required Webelos adventures and choose two of the elective adventures.
When a Cub has done the requirements for an adventure, the Webelos den leader, rather than a parent, approves most of the adventures. For each adventure a cub completes, they receive a pin to wear on the Webelos colors. After completing eight adventures a cub can receive the Webelos badge.

After they have earned the Webelos badge, a Webelos Scout can work on the remaining electives until they finish fourth grade (or turns 11 years old). They can choose elective adventures that may show new hobbies and teach skills that will be useful during their Scouting years. When they complete an elective adventure, they receive an additional adventure pin to wear on the Webelos colors.

Arrow of Light Scouts

The highest rank in Cub Scouting is the Arrow of Light. Earning this rank prepares a Cub Scout to become a Scout. Scouts must complete six required adventures and two elective adventures to earn the Arrow of Light rank. For each adventure a cub completes, they receive a pin to wear on the Webelos colors.

The Arrow of Light badge is the only Cub Scout badge that can be worn on the Scouting America uniform when they cross over into a troop. Adult leaders who earned the Arrow of Light rank when they were young may also show their achievement by wearing a special square knot on their adult uniform.
